Acanthomyrmex Thailandensis – Armoured Big Heads - Advanced
Thailandensis are a rare species which was only discovered and documented in the 90’s. They are found in shallow nests in the cavities of dead twigs and wood, or under bark and small stoned.
The striking thing about them is their large and impressive majors. Their heads make up over 50% of their size and some 70% of their body mass. The impressive mandibles are used to defend the nests and to crush seeds for the colonies protein.
With that in mind they will eat small insects and they will gain much proteins from the small seeds they collect. A particular preference is with Fig seeds.
Being nocturnal they will become more active in the dim light of your room, on an overcast day and in the night with red light. Being small in numbers (totals estimated at 100-300 workers) their nocturnal lifestyle is suited to best protect them while predators sleeps.
In reality, not much is yet known about this species and information on their care is sparse at best. For that reason we advise these to be best suited with experienced keepers who have the knowledge and practice in thinking on the spot and adjusting conditions as needed.
